The PDF combines three technologies: A subset of the PostScript page description programming language, for generating the layout and graphics. Many different versions of some of these structures can appear in the file, due to the long evolution of this file format. The bitmap image file consists of fixed-size structures as well as variable-size structures appearing in a predetermined sequence. Each PDF file encapsulates a complete description of a fixed-layout flat document, including the text, fonts, graphics, and other information needed to display it.
